What You Need
I’m using Anthony’s Organic Raw Buckwheat Groats; however, you can use any brand as long as the buckwheat groats are raw and not roasted.
The other item that you’ll need is something to sprout the buckwheat in. I’m using a Sprouting Jar that you can order through Amazon or possibly find at your local health food store. The Sprouting Jar looks like a mason jar with a lid that has holes through it.
Step 1 (Soak the Buckwheat Groats)
Soak 1 cup of buckwheat in purified water for a minimum of 6 hours or overnight. This will start the germination process of the seed. Soaking also releases enzyme inhibitors to make the seed more digestible.
Step 2 (Drain the Water and Rinse the Buckwheat)
After you have soaked your buckwheat, drain the water and then rinse the buckwheat with clean water.
Step 3 (Turn the Jar Upside Down in a Small Bowl)
Next, you’re going to turn the jar upside down in a small bowl to let the excess water drip out. You want to leave a little space between the jar and the bowl so that air can easily flow in and out of the jar. Let it sit out on your counter top for 2 to 3 days, or until you start seeing tails grow at the end of the seed. You want to be sure to rinse the buckwheat at least twice a day while it’s sitting out to prevent it from molding.
Step 4 (Rinse, Drain, and Refrigerate)
Once the buckwheat has sprouted, rinse and drain the sprouts one last time and place in a tightly sealed glass container. Then place the sprouts in a refrigerator. The buckwheat sprouts can last in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Enjoy! 🙂
